Proper Wine Storage | Common Mistakes at Home-- Many individuals who appreciate wine may acquire a collection with enthusiasm, yet they might lack the specific knowledge required to store their bottles correctly. This can inadvertently lead to the deterioration of their prized wines. One of the most prevalent errors is storing wine at an unsuitable temperature . Wine is best kept in cool environments, ideally around 55°F, and should not exceed 65°F . Placing wine on top of a refrigerator or near heat sources like stoves can expose it to temperatures well above this optimal range, causing the wine to age too quickly and lose its intended structure and aroma . In fact, temperatures exceeding 70°F can rapidly degrade a wine's quality . While a standard refrigerator might seem like a cool place, its temperature is generally too low for long-term wine storage, potentially drying out corks and allowing damaging oxidation to occur . Furthermore, maintaining a consistent temperature is crucial; significant fluctuations can be more detrimental than a steady temperature that is slightly above or below the ideal.  Here at Wine Storage Management we keep temps at a consistent 55°F.

Exposure to light is another significant factor that can negatively impact wine . Sunlight, in particular, contains ultraviolet (UV) rays that can degrade the delicate compounds within wine, leading to premature aging and undesirable flavors . Even artificial light can cause damage over time . Therefore, storing wine in a dark place, away from direct sunlight, is essential for preserving its quality . The use of colored glass bottles by vintners serves as a protective measure against light, acting as "sunglasses for wine".  No light is getting into our locations!

Humidity also plays a vital role in proper wine storage. The ideal relative humidity range is generally between 50% and 70%, with some experts suggesting an optimal level around 60-75% . Maintaining adequate humidity is particularly important for wines sealed with natural corks. If the humidity is too low, the corks can dry out, losing their elasticity and allowing oxygen to enter the bottle, which can oxidize and spoil the wine . Conversely, excessively high humidity can create conditions conducive to mold and mildew growth, potentially damaging the wine labels and even the corks .  Our cellars are maintained at an optimal 55° and 70% humidity.

For wines that utilize traditional cork closures, the orientation of the bottle during storage is also important. Storing bottles on their side ensures that the wine remains in contact with the cork, preventing it from drying out and maintaining a proper seal . When bottles are stored upright, the cork can lose moisture, shrink, and allow oxygen to seep into the bottle, leading to oxidation . This is less of a concern for wines sealed with screw caps, which do not require horizontal storage to maintain their integrity .

Finally, excessive vibration can negatively impact wine, especially during long-term storage . It is believed that vibrations can interfere with the natural chemical reactions that occur as wine ages, potentially leading to premature and undesirable changes in its character . Therefore, it is advisable to avoid storing wine near sources of significant vibration, such as washing machines, dryers, or even frequently opened refrigerators.

Don't let these common mistakes compromise your precious collection! Ensure your wines age gracefully by entrusting them to the experts.
